This is the home of an independent resesarch project by journalist Jordyn Haime to bring light to the history of Judaism in Taiwan, as well as Jewish life in Taiwan, in a free and open-source environment.
All information on this site is the product of 10 months of research and journalism conducted under a Fulbright grant. Click here to learn more about the project.
The official Taiwan Jewish Community (TJC) formally began with a small community of Jews abroad for business ventures in 1978, but Jews have been here since the U.S. military was stationed in Taiwan in the 1950s, and potentially earlier for the opium trade. The community has waxed and waned with Taiwan's economy, but today an estimated 1,000 Jews or less reside here, hailing from North and South America, Europe, and Israel, over time creating a community that is diverse and adaptable. Many Jews today also share Taiwanese heritage and grow up speaking English, Chinese and Hebrew.
The Jewish community today has two homes, at the conservative Taiwan Jewish Community and at the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center which opened in 2021 in partnership with Chabad.

I am looking for any copies of Yaacov Liberman’s newsletters/bulletins from his time as president of the Taiwan Jewish Community. Of particular interest is the 10th anniversary issue titled “One Jew to Another.” Computer scans or mailed copies would be extremely valuable to this project. If you have one, please contact me here or reach out directly at jordynhaime@gmail.com.
I am always looking for photographs of the Taiwan Jewish Community, particularly from before the year 2000. Photos of Jewish servies and events at the old American military base are of particular interest. If you have any photos and wouldn’t mind them being shared on this site, please contact me here or send them directly to jordynhaime@gmail.com.
